The Discipline of Becoming

The Discipline of Becoming

“But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have
preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.” — 1 Corinthians 9:27 KJV

Becoming is not accidental; it is disciplined. No one becomes great by chance. No one becomes
influential by accident. No one becomes powerful by luck. Becoming is intentional. God has a
glorious future for you, but you must be disciplined to become it. Many want the future but refuse
the discipline that produces it.

Discipline is choosing what matters most over what feels good now. It is saying no to present
pleasure for future glory. Jesus became the Saviour of the world through discipline — He despised
the shame, endured the cross, and obeyed unto death. “Though he were a Son, yet learned he
obedience by the things which he suffered” — Hebrews 5:8 KJV. If the Son of God needed
discipline to become, you also need discipline to become.

The discipline of becoming touches every area. You discipline your flesh to become spiritually
strong. You discipline your tongue to become wise. You discipline your time to become
productive. You discipline your appetites to become holy. Without discipline, potential remains
potential. Discipline turns potential into reality.

God disciplines those He loves because He is committed to their becoming. “For whom the Lord
loveth he chasteneth” — Hebrews 12:6 KJV. His discipline is not to punish you but to shape you.
He prunes you so you can bear more fruit. He refines you so you can shine brighter. Every
discipline you embrace today is building the person you will be tomorrow.

We are disciplined by the Spirit. True discipline is not by willpower alone; it is by the Holy Spirit.
Self-discipline fails, but Spirit-discipline prevails. The Holy Spirit gives us self-control — the grace
to say no to the flesh and yes to God. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power,
and of love, and of a sound mind” — 2 Timothy 1:7 KJV.

When you are filled with the Holy Spirit, He disciplines you in love and empowers you to become
all God has ordained for you to be.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the destiny You have ordained for me. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit
and teach me the discipline of becoming. Give me grace to discipline my flesh, my thoughts, and
my ways, that I may become all You want me to be. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
