Mahama Says Ghana Safer Today Than Before At Hospital

President John Dramani Mahama says the nation is now safer today than it was before. He said this in his address at the commissioning of an 85-bed ward at the Ghana Police Hospital in Accra, which was named after Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Inspector General of Police.

The commissioning of the three-storey building was to mark the Golden Jubilee Celebration of the Police Hospital. It is fully equipped with ultramodern health facilities and increases the hospital’s total bed capacity to more than 200, providing additional space for patients and enabling more specialised care on site.

President Mahama hailed Mr Yohuno for a very good job he was doing in maintaining the nation’s peace and security across. “Our country is safer today than it was before,” the President said, commending the police administration for its efforts in reducing unresolved murder cases and highway robberies.

The facility named Christian Tetteh Yohuno Ward Complex includes separate male and female medical and surgical wards and dedicated male and female paediatric wards, the first of its kind since the hospital was established 50 years ago. IGP Yohuno said the landmark facility marks a major step in standardising health as a fundamental human right for the Ghana Police Service.

President Mahama, who is Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, said government remains committed to providing the police with logistics including 40 additional armoured vehicles and body armour expected soon, after 50 vehicles delivered in December 2025. He directed GH¢300 million for 250 new police apartments in the 2027 Budget and GH¢200 million to complete the stalled 22-year Police Hospital expansion project with ICU, MRI, CT scan, theatres and mortuary.

He noted that policing demands physical and mental well-being and mental health support must be accessible without stigma. Established 50 years ago for police personnel and dependants, the hospital now serves the general public, accident victims and victims of violent crimes. The Golden Jubilee celebration was used to reflect on its growth and future investment.
