The Ministry of Rest

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew
11:28 KJV

Rest is a ministry. Jesus did not only minister healing, deliverance, and power — He ministered
rest. There are many who are busy but broken, working but weary, serving but sighing. God does
not want you to live tired. He wants you to live rested. There is something God does for you only
in rest that He cannot do while you are striving.

Rest is not laziness; rest is trust. To rest is to cease from your own struggle and trust in God’s
ability. “For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did
from his” — Hebrews 4:10 KJV. When you enter His rest, you cease from anxiety, from worry, from
self-effort. You still work, but you work from rest, not for rest. You work because you are rested,
not to find rest.

There is a rest for the body, but there is also a rest for the soul. Your body may be on a bed but
your soul may be in turmoil. Jesus gives rest for your soul. “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of
me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls” — Matthew 11:29
KJV. When you take His yoke, you exchange your heavy yoke of sin, fear, and care for His light yoke
of grace, peace, and joy.

Many miss the ministry of rest because they think God only speaks in noise and activity. But God
often ministers in stillness. Elijah heard God not in the wind, not in the earthquake, not in the fire,
but in a still small voice. It is in rest that God restores, refills, and reveals.

We enter rest by the Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of rest. “The Spirit of the LORD caused him
to rest” — Isaiah 63:14 KJV. When you are filled with the Holy Spirit, He quiets your storms, He
stills your battles, He causes you to rest even in warfare. The Spirit does not make you restless;
He makes you restful. His presence is your resting place.

Prayer: Father, thank You for Your ministry of rest. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and cause me to
rest in Your love, in Your power, and in Your promises. Today I cease from worry and I enter Your rest for my soul and body. Minister rest to me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
