Agbodza Threatens ECG, Ghana Water Over Road Destruction
Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza has issued a strong warning to utility service providers in Accra, threatening legal action against any institution that destroys newly completed roads to lay service lines. The Minister said the government will no longer tolerate the practice of cutting through fresh asphalt to fix pipes and cables.
Agbodza made the declaration while addressing concerns over road maintenance costs, stating that the Electricity Company of Ghana, Ghana Water Company Limited and telecommunication companies must coordinate with his ministry before any excavation. He explained that utility providers are expected to lay their infrastructure before road construction is completed, not after.
The Roads Minister stressed that the practice causes rapid deterioration of roads and drains public funds, according to information shared by EIB Network. He noted that his ministry is investing heavily to fix roads across the country and will protect those investments with strict enforcement and legal measures to deter further destruction.
He warned that any agency that fails to comply will face court action and be forced to restore the road at its own cost. Agbodza added that a new coordination framework will be introduced to ensure all utility service providers align their work plans with road contractors to prevent future damages.
The statement has sparked public support, with many Ghanaians commending the minister for taking a bold stance to preserve road infrastructure. Stakeholders are now calling for stronger inter-agency collaboration to ensure that newly built roads last their full lifespan without unnecessary cuts.
