Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned Ghana and 46 other countries to stop Russia from using their citizens to pay for its war in Ukraine. He delivered the alert from Kyiv on Monday as Moscow intensifies foreign recruitment. His message calls on governments to protect their people from deceptive enlistment.
Zelensky said Russian networks are luring young men from Africa, Asia and Latin America with promises of jobs, studies and high pay. Those promises turn into frontline deployment. He said no nation should allow its nationals to become fuel for what he described as Russian madness. The warning lists Ghana among targeted states.
According to the Office of the Ukrainian President, Zelensky stressed that every country must investigate and block recruitment channels. He urged foreign ministries to issue public alerts and tighten visa checks linked to private military intermediaries. He added that Ukraine is sharing intelligence with partners to expose the networks.
The recruitment pattern has raised security concerns across West Africa. Analysts say foreign fighters face severe legal risks and battlefield losses. Under international humanitarian law, mercenary activity carries no prisoner-of-war protection. Ghana has not recorded official military cooperation with Russia. Officials in Accra say citizen protection abroad remains a priority.
Zelensky said Ukraine seeks global solidarity to end the war. He asked leaders not to stay silent while their people are drawn into combat under false pretenses. He said stopping the flow of foreign recruits will reduce Russia’s capacity to sustain offensive operations and save innocent lives.
