Mahama Shifts Brogya Genfi In Shock Defence Shakeup
President John Dramani Mahama has executed a strategic realignment of his administration with the immediate reassignment of Deputy Minister for Defence Ernest Brogya Genfi as Presidential Advisor on National Resilience and Emergency Preparedness, a move that signals heightened prioritization of crisis governance at the seat of government.
The redeployment, announced in a statement signed by Presidential Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, forms part of a broader recalibration of ministerial portfolios. Under the same directive, Minister for Labour, Employment and Job Creation Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo has been moved to the Presidency as Minister of State for Special Initiatives, while incumbent Special Initiatives Minister Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum assumes leadership of the Labour Ministry in a direct exchange of responsibilities.
Brogya Genfi, who has served as Deputy Defence Minister since March 2025, has been pivotal in maintaining administrative continuity at the Defence Ministry following the tragic military helicopter crash in August 2025 that claimed the life of substantive Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah and seven compatriots. He subsequently held the fort under the supervision of Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson for nearly a year, earning commendation for institutional steadiness during an emotionally fraught transition until Kenneth Gilbert Adjei was appointed substantive Defence Minister in the August 7 reshuffle.
In his first public reaction, the reassigned advisor expressed profound gratitude to the President for renewed confidence, pledging unwavering loyalty in his new capacity. Genfi conveyed appreciation to the Military High Command, Ghana Armed Forces, Defence Industries Holding Company and Veterans Administration for their steadfast support throughout his tenure, describing his service as an honour forged in difficult circumstances.
