Former Boxer Aitey Powers Arrested Over Death Threat
The Accra Regional Police Command has taken into custody 46-year-old former professional pugilist Michael Aitey Okai, widely known in boxing circles as Aitey Powers, following an alleged criminal threat against the Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah. The arrest was effected after a video clip depicting the suspect purportedly issuing a death threat against the sports administrator gained traction across digital platforms, triggering swift intervention by law enforcement operatives tasked with maintaining public order.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect, whose once flamboyant ring persona earned him notoriety in Ghana’s super middleweight division, recorded and disseminated footage in which he made utterances construed as a direct menace to the life of the NSA chief. Police intelligence, upon monitoring the circulation of the material, initiated a targeted operation that led to his apprehension in Accra. He is currently assisting investigators as detectives interrogate the motive, context and potential aggravating factors surrounding the incident.
