GIA: 72% Ghanaians approve Mahama’s performance

President John Dramani Mahama’s performance has received a 72 per cent approval rating among Ghanaians, according to the latest survey conducted by Global Info Analytics. The poll found that 21 per cent of respondents disapproved of the President’s performance, while seven per cent said they had no opinion.

Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah In an Interview with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV’s The point of view on Wednesday August 12, said the rating reflected public assessment of Mr Mahama’s personal performance in his current term rather than support for any political party. “This is based on his personal performance. Seventy-two per cent of Ghanaians approved his performance. Twenty-one per cent disapproved, and seven per cent had no opinion. The approval for this term of his presidency is very high. People are cool with him,” he said. The findings point to relatively strong public approval of the President less than two years into his current administration, although the regional breakdown shows significant differences in how his performance is viewed across the country.

The Upper West Region recorded the highest approval rating, with 92 per cent of respondents expressing satisfaction with the President’s performance. The Volta Region followed with 88 per cent approval, while the Northern Region recorded 72 per cent and the Eastern Region 71 per cent. Support was comparatively lower in the Ashanti and North East regions. The Ashanti Region recorded 56 per cent approval, the lowest among the regions cited, while the North East recorded 59 per cent. Mr Dankwah said the survey was based on 7,700 completed interviews conducted between July 15 and 24, 2026. He said the poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 1.5 percentage points, indicating that the reported national approval figure should be considered within that statistical range.

The survey is also intended to establish a baseline for a longer-term public opinion tracking exercise. Global InfoAnalytics plans to conduct periodic polls leading up to the 2028 general elections to monitor changes in public sentiment towards the President and the direction of the country. Beyond presidential approval, the survey examined how Ghanaians perceive the country’s overall trajectory. Sixty per cent of respondents said Ghana was moving in the right direction, while 28 per cent believed the country was heading in the wrong direction.

The findings also suggested a relatively positive assessment of household welfare. Fifty-three per cent of respondents said their standard of living had improved compared with the previous year, while 19 per cent said their living conditions had deteriorated. The figures provide an indication of how economic perceptions may be influencing broader public sentiment, with more than half of those surveyed reporting an improvement in their personal standard of living. However, the regional variations in presidential approval underline differences in public perception across the country. While approval exceeded 80 per cent in the Upper West and Volta regions, it fell below 60 per cent in the Ashanti and North East regions.

The results come as the Mahama administration continues to implement its policy agenda and seek to demonstrate progress on economic recovery, employment, public services and other campaign commitments. With the survey expected to serve as the starting point for subsequent tracking polls, future results could provide a clearer picture of whether the President’s current approval level is sustained, rises or declines as his administration progresses towards the 2028 elections. The latest findings therefore offer a snapshot rather than a permanent measure of public support, particularly as perceptions of economic conditions, government performance and policy outcomes can change over time.
