High Court Acquits Sedina Tamakloe

The Court of Appeal has acquitted and discharged former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, overturning her 10-year prison sentence after ruling that the prosecution failed to prove the charges brought against her. The appellate court, in a judgment delivered on Thursday, July 30, 2026, held that the evidence presented by the prosecution was insufficient to sustain the convictions against the former MASLOC boss, who had been found guilty by the High Court of multiple offences, including causing financial loss to the state, stealing, money laundering and improper payment of public funds.

The decision effectively nullifies the 10-year sentence with hard labour imposed on her by an Accra High Court in 2024. Tamakloe-Attionu had been convicted on 78 counts relating to alleged financial irregularities during her tenure as head of MASLOC, alongside businessman Daniel Axim, who was also convicted in the case. The former MASLOC CEO was tried and convicted in absentia after she failed to return to Ghana while on permission to travel to the United States for medical treatment.

The High Court had in 2021 granted her approval to seek medical care abroad while the trial was ongoing, but she remained outside the country, leading the court to continue proceedings without her physical presence. Following her conviction, her lawyers filed a notice of appeal in May 2024, challenging the decision of the trial court and seeking to overturn the judgment.

In June 2026, Tamakloe-Attionu returned to Ghana after a government-led extradition process, paving the way for her to begin serving the sentence imposed by the High Court. Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu had earlier announced that personnel from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Prisons Service took her into custody upon her arrival and commenced arrangements for her incarceration.

However, the Court of Appeal’s latest ruling has now cleared her of all charges for which she was convicted, bringing an end to the criminal proceedings against her. The case, which centred on alleged financial breaches at MASLOC during her administration, had attracted significant public attention due to the amounts involved and the high-profile nature of the accused persons.

The appellate court’s decision means Tamakloe-Attionu is no longer liable to serve the custodial sentence handed down by the High Court.
