“Rise Above Provocation’- John Boadu Backs Wontumi
ACCRA — Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and aspiring National Chairman, John Boadu, has declared his unwavering support for the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, describing him as a “political prisoner” amid his ongoing legal challenges.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, Boadu said he had been following developments involving Wontumi “with deep concern and sympathy,” expressing solidarity with the regional chairman, his family and supporters.
He said the NPP remains united in difficult times, stressing that the party stands firmly behind one of its leading figures. “The New Patriotic Party is a family, and in moments of difficulty, we stand together. I join the Party in expressing our firm belief that Chairman Wontumi is a Political Prisoner, and I stand in full solidarity with him, his family, and his supporters” Boadu stated.
His comments add to a growing chorus of support from senior members and stalwarts of the opposition New Patriotic Party, who have criticized the circumstances surrounding Wontumi’s detention and called for his release.
Despite the heightened political atmosphere, Boadu urged NPP members and supporters across the country to remain calm and conduct themselves within the confines of the law while party leaders pursue legal avenues to secure Wontumi’s freedom. “I respectfully urge all NPP members and supporters to remain calm, united, disciplined, and law-abiding while the Party leadership pursues every lawful avenue to secure his earliest release,” he said.
The aspiring National Chairman further cautioned party faithfuls against responding to any form of provocation, encouraging them instead to uphold the party’s democratic values and traditions.
“Let us rise above provocation and continue to uphold the democratic values and traditions of our party,” he added.
Boadu however expressed confidence that the NPP would overcome the challenge through unity and faith in justice. “Our strength lies in our unity, resilience, and faith in justice. May God grant Chairman Wontumi strength and protection, and may truth and justice prevail,” the statement concluded.
The statement comes as political debate continues over Wontumi’s detention, with the case attracting widespread attention from political actors and the general public. The NPP leadership has maintained that it will continue to explore all lawful means to secure the Ashanti Regional Chairman’s release while calling on supporters to remain peaceful.
