WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump has called on “rich” oil-producing Gulf nations to fund American efforts to secure the Strait of Hormuz, warning that the United States can no longer shoulder the burden alone amid escalating tensions with Iran. The remarks came during a media conference at the Oval Office on Monday.
Trump asserted that the waterway, through which a significant share of global crude passes, is critical to Gulf economies but has been protected largely by US naval power. He said the time has come for regional stakeholders to contribute financially to the security architecture. “The Gulf nations are getting rich from that strait. They should be paying us to keep it open and safe,” Trump stated.
In the same briefing, the President announced that the US is preparing to launch another “major attack” on Iran. He offered no specifics on timing or targets, but framed the action as a response to what he described as Iranian provocations in the region. The declaration immediately heightened concerns over a further escalation in the already volatile Middle East.
The Strait of Hormuz handles a substantial volume of the world’s seaborne oil exports, making its stability a cornerstone of global energy markets. Any disruption risks sharp spikes in crude prices and supply chain shocks. US forces have maintained a long-standing presence in the Gulf to deter threats to commercial shipping and to ensure freedom of navigation.
Analysts note that Trump’s demand for direct payment from Gulf states represents a departure from traditional burden-sharing arrangements, which have typically been managed through defense partnerships and arms sales rather than explicit security fees. The proposal is likely to test diplomatic ties with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, and other key producers.
