The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has announced the deployment of new state-of-the-art security screening equipment at Accra International Airport, a move expected to strengthen aviation security while significantly improving the passenger screening experience.
According to a public notice issued by the company, the new technology has been installed at the passenger screening checkpoints in Terminals 2 and 3. The upgrade is designed to enhance security operations by enabling faster and more efficient screening without compromising international aviation safety standards.
One of the most significant changes introduced under the new system is that passengers will no longer be required to remove laptops and other large electronic devices from their cabin baggage during routine security screening. This is expected to reduce congestion at screening checkpoints and shorten waiting times.
The company also announced that passengers will, in most cases, be allowed to keep their shoes and belts on while passing through security checks unless they are selected for additional screening based on security profiling.
Another major improvement concerns the handling of liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs). Travellers will now be able to leave these items inside their cabin bags during screening, eliminating the need for separate inspections in many instances. However, GACL emphasised that the existing restriction on liquids exceeding 100 millilitres per container remains in force and must continue to be observed by all passengers.
To further enhance efficiency, the airport has introduced an Automatic Tray Return System that will quickly return screening trays to passengers after inspection, allowing them to repack their belongings more conveniently and helping to improve the overall flow of passengers through security checkpoints.
GACL stated that the transition to the new screening system will be carried out progressively and in phases alongside the existing equipment and procedures to ensure smooth operations during the implementation period.
The company noted that the modernisation initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to improve passenger comfort while maintaining robust aviation security measures in line with international best practices.
Management has appealed to passengers and all airport stakeholders to cooperate with security personnel throughout the transition period as operations gradually shift to the new system in the coming days.
The introduction of the advanced screening technology is expected to enhance operational efficiency, reduce processing times and reinforce Accra International Airport’s position as one of the region’s leading aviation gateways.
