Africa Seeks Fairness, Not Charity – Gnassingbé
Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé emphasized that Africa isn’t seeking charity, but rather fairness, recognition, and justice at the Diaspora Summit 2025 in Accra. He stressed that reparations for slavery and colonization are crucial for Africa’s development and global stability, urging binding international commitments.
Gnassingbé highlighted that colonialism’s consequences continue to affect Africa, creating disparities in global output and trade. He proposed debt cancellation, multilateral funds for education and innovation, and stronger UN frameworks to address these issues.
The President emphasized that reparatory justice is about dismantling hidden barriers in the global system, not assigning blame. He called for acknowledging the transatlantic slave trade as a crime against humanity, seeking financial restitution, educational investments, and policy changes to heal wounds and build a stronger future.
