Mystery Shrouds Deaths of 15 Nairobi Street Children

In a heart-wrenching scene, Nairobi bid farewell to 15 street children who died under mysterious circumstances over the past month. The community is grappling with questions as to what led to the untimely demise of these young lives.

According to Nation Media Group, the children, aged between three months and 35 years, were buried at Lang’ata Cemetery in a mass burial organized by the Agnes Kagure Foundation. The foundation stepped in to support the burial after the bodies were dumped at Nairobi Funeral Home and Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital mortuary.

The causes of death remain unclear, with reports indicating varied circumstances – some died from malnutrition, others from attacks, and a few from pneumonia due to sleeping on the streets. Peter Wanjiru, coordinator of street families, lamented, “We’re not on the streets because we like. It’s because of circumstances. The course of death for most is cold and hunger.”

Agnes Kagure, whose foundation organized the burial, expressed concern over the vulnerability of street children, stating that they often fall prey to criminals and struggle with access to basic necessities. As the nation mourns, questions linger about the government’s response to the plissue.

Ruth Lukorito, a mourner, thanked those responsible for the dignified sendoff, saying, “At least they can finally rest in peace.” The incident has sparked outrage and calls for action to address the plight of street children in Nairobi.
