President Mahama Signs Law Regulating Cryptocurrencies and Virtual Assets

President John Dramani Mahama has signed the Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASP) Bill into law, marking a significant milestone in Ghana’s financial sector. The new law provides a clear regulatory framework for virtual assets, including cryptocurrencies, and establishes oversight bodies to ensure investor protection and market integrity.

The law empowers the Bank of Ghana and the Securities and Exchange Commission to regulate virtual asset service providers, requiring them to obtain licenses or official registration. This move is expected to boost confidence among investors and strengthen Ghana’s position in the emerging global digital economy.

The VASP law legalizes the use, trading, and provision of services related to virtual assets, providing a safe and transparent ecosystem for operators. The regulatory framework is designed to balance innovation with consumer protection and financial stability, aligning with international standards.

The law’s implementation follows extensive deliberations in Parliament and support from stakeholders, including virtual asset market operators and major exchanges. The Securities and Exchange Commission has assured the public of its commitment to protecting investors and maintaining market integrity.

The regulatory framework is expected to unlock new opportunities for Ghana’s fintech sector, supporting innovation and financial inclusion. With the law in place, Ghana joins other African countries taking structured approaches to digital asset oversight.

The move reflects growing international pressure for countries to regulate virtual assets, and Ghana’s decision is seen as a step towards maintaining credibility with global financial institutions.
