Fire Razes Murtala Mohammed Family Home In Tamale
A devastating blaze tore through the family residence of the late Tamale Central Member of Parliament, Murtala Mohammed, in Tamale on Wednesday, destroying nine of seventeen rooms before firefighters contained the inferno. The incident has drawn national attention to the household of a public figure who perished in last year’s military helicopter tragedy.
The Ghana National Fire Service received a distress call in the afternoon and deployed personnel who arrived within minutes. The Northern Regional Public Relations Officer, ADO I Hudu Baba, confirmed that two schoolchildren trapped in one of the rooms were rescued before the fire was subdued. He indicated that prompt intervention prevented the flames from consuming the remainder of the structure.
The inferno obliterated a significant portion of the property, leaving extensive damage to personal effects and structural fixtures. Fire investigators have commenced a forensic examination to ascertain the origin and trajectory of the blaze, while assessing the full scale of material loss. Officials have not ruled out electrical faults or domestic hazards as potential precipitants.
The late Murtala Mohammed was among eight individuals who died in a military helicopter crash in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region. The delegation was en route on an official assignment when the aircraft went down, claiming the lives of senior government officials, a political executive, and military crew members.
The latest tragedy at the Tamale residence underscores vulnerabilities in residential safety and emergency preparedness. As investigations proceed, the GNFS has reiterated calls for heightened fire prevention measures in homes, particularly those housing children and elderly dependents.
