Ghana will build a modern museum to house returned artefacts from abroad, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced in Accra as part of cultural heritage restoration drive.
The Minister said government is engaging international museums and private collectors to repatriate Ghanaian artefacts looted during colonial era. The new museum will provide secure, climate controlled facility meeting global standards. He said Ghana deserves world class space for its heritage.
According to Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, discussions with British Museum, other European institutions and United States galleries are advancing. He said Ghana has secured commitment for return of several gold weights, stools and regalia. He said museum will also boost cultural tourism.
Ghana has intensified campaign for restitution in line with UNESCO conventions on illicit trafficking of cultural property. Manhyia Palace Museum recently received Asante artefacts on loan. Experts say permanent return requires storage that meets conservation standards. The new facility will address that.
Government has not disclosed location or cost but said design will incorporate Ghanaian architecture and digital displays. Ghana Museums and Monuments Board will manage collection. Stakeholders say project will create jobs, attract researchers and strengthen national identity if completed on time.
