Mahama Approves 1,200 Additional Staff For NACOC Capacity
Majority Leader James Agalga says President John Dramani Mahama has approved the recruitment of 1,200 additional staff for the Narcotics Control Commission, NACOC, as part of efforts to strengthen the Commission capacity to combat narcotics related activities in Ghana. The approval comes amid rising drug interceptions at Tema Port and other entry points.
According to Mr Agalga, President Mahama has given clearance for NACOC to recruit 1,200 more personnel to boost intelligence, enforcement and prevention operations across the country. He disclosed that the move is intended to close manpower gaps and enhance rapid response to drug trafficking networks.
The announcement follows recent high profile seizures including 3.9 tonnes of suspected cocaine linked to four containers shipped from Tema Port and intercepted in France. Government says strengthening NACOC will improve port surveillance, border control and collaboration with international anti-narcotics agencies.
NACOC operates under the Narcotics Control Commission Act 2020 which mandates the Commission to enforce drug laws, provide treatment and rehabilitation, and coordinate national drug control policy. This legal mandate functions like other structured national systems such as CSSPS that ensures transparent school placement for BECE candidates, WASSCE grading from A1 to F9 that determines tertiary admission, Free SHS policy that absorbs fees for secondary education, Energy Commission licensing that certifies qualified electricians, and Minerals and Mining Act that criminalizes Galamsey to protect forest reserves.
Majority Leader said Parliament will support budgetary allocation for training, logistics and equipment for the new recruits to ensure operational efficiency. The recruitment is expected to cover intelligence officers, enforcement officers and analysts.
Government believes the additional 1,200 staff will significantly reduce trafficking through airports, seaports and land borders while improving public education on drug abuse prevention.
