Sam George Exposes Rushed Masts Stalling Rural Connectivity
The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations has attributed persistent setbacks in rural telephony deployment to fundamental technical lapses, including inadequate site evaluations hastily executed ahead of recent general elections. The revelation casts fresh light on why several connectivity projects remain incomplete and nonoperational despite substantial investment.
During a working tour of the Akuapem South District, Samuel Nartey George explained that critical engineering considerations such as line of sight were overlooked as the previous administration expedited installations for electoral advantage. The minister stated that in siting rural telephony projects, technical factors like line of sight are critical, however, due to elections, the previous government rushed several sites without doing proper assessments.
The minister indicated that such omissions have rendered certain masts ineffective, undermining the core objective of bridging the digital divide and extending coverage to underserved communities. His inspection forms part of a broader assessment of infrastructure viability aimed at rectifying inherited deficiencies and ensuring optimal functionality.
Ghana’s rural telephony initiative was conceived as a strategic intervention to enhance nationwide inclusion, enabling remote communities to access essential digital services, mobile connectivity, and emergency communication. Effective implementation hinges on meticulous topographical analysis and radio frequency planning, without which signal propagation becomes severely compromised.
Government has pledged corrective measures, including comprehensive re-evaluation of questionable sites and enforcement of stringent technical standards for future rollouts. Stakeholders anticipate that the remedial approach will restore confidence in the program and accelerate Ghana’s quest for universal access.
