Ho Central MP Enagages Market Women
Tensions have escalated within the Ho Central Market following a decongestion exercise initiated by the Municipal Chief Executive, prompting intervention from both market leadership and parliamentary representation. The operation targets traders occupying pavements, vehicular corridors and undesignated open spaces in contravention of assembly bylaws.
Market Queen Madam Norvixoxo disclosed that the MCE indicated receipt of a directive to clear encroachers from pedestrian walkways, parking enclaves and carriageways to restore orderliness and sanitation. She lamented that many traders had abandoned approved sheds and lockable stores, migrating onto streets to conduct business while erecting unauthorized structures.
She explained that some traders resort to makeshift warehouses constructed from timber, metal sheets and occasionally masonry without requisite permits, with portions of such enclosures converted into refuse receptacles and insanitary conveniences. The Queen also highlighted the plight of petty fishmongers who honour their tax obligations yet cannot afford formal storage facilities, enduring exposure to rainfall and appealing to government for construction of affordable sheds to accommodate vulnerable sellers.
Member of Parliament for Ho Central, Richmond Edem Kofi Kpotosu, stated that while in the capital he received information concerning enforcement actions undertaken by the Ho Municipal Assembly involving removal of market women from unauthorized zones. According to #MarketWatch, the legislator undertook a working visit to assess conditions firsthand and engage directly with affected traders to explore ameliorative measures.
The MP emphasized the imperative of compliance with designated trading areas to safeguard health against scorching sun and unsanitary conditions, while assuring constituents of continued advocacy for expanded infrastructure. Assembly officials contend that indiscriminate street trading obstructs emergency access, undermines revenue mobilization, and compromises public health standards.
Stakeholders now anticipate a collaborative framework balancing enforcement with social protection, ensuring that decongestion does not exacerbate livelihood vulnerability while restoring discipline within the commercial enclave.
