President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated the Northshore Apparel Hub in Savelugu in the Northern Region, a flagship industrial enclave conceived to anchor the administration’s Twenty-Four-Hour Economy vision and catalyse inclusive industrial transformation beyond traditional growth corridors.
The facility is designed to operate on a continuous production model, leveraging shift systems, integrated logistics and value addition to position Ghana as a competitive sourcing destination for apparel and textile manufacturing. The project is expected to generate substantial employment for youth and women while strengthening backward linkages to cotton cultivation and garment finishing.
In remarks delivered at the commissioning ceremony, the President emphasised that the hub represents a deliberate pivot from episodic industrialisation to sustained productivity, noting that round-the-clock operations will optimise machinery utilisation, accelerate export readiness and stimulate ancillary enterprise in transport, packaging and maintenance. A local entrepreneur present described the development as a timely intervention capable of stemming rural urban drift by anchoring decent jobs within the savanna belt.
Savelugu, historically agrarian with limited industrial infrastructure, stands to benefit from improved utility provision, skills training and market access associated with the hub’s establishment. The initiative aligns with broader policy objectives to decentralise manufacturing, reduce import dependency and enhance foreign exchange earnings through light manufacturing-led growth.
The operationalisation of the Northshore Apparel Hub is projected to serve as a proof of concept for replication across other regions, signalling a transition toward an economy that works beyond conventional hours and harnesses latent productive capacity.
