Baby Still Missing as June Flood Death Toll Hits 39

A four-month-old baby remains missing nearly two months after devastating floods swept through communities in seven regions, with the disaster claiming 39 lives and affecting nearly 92,000 people. Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed disclosed the latest figures on Monday, August 24, 2026, during the Government Accountability Series, saying the infant is the only person still officially reported missing from the June 29 disaster.

According to the Minister, 91,989 people from 18,398 households across 77 districts were affected by the floods. “39 deaths” were recorded, while one person — a four-month-old baby — remained missing, he said. The figures highlight the extensive human impact of the floods, which affected homes and communities across parts of the country and resulted in significant loss of life.

The Greater Accra Region recorded the highest number of affected persons and the largest number of fatalities. A total of 56,022 people across 27 districts were affected, with 17 deaths recorded. The Central Region was the second hardest hit, with 21,882 people affected across 16 districts and eight fatalities. In the Volta Region, the floods affected 9,466 people across seven districts, resulting in four deaths.

The Ashanti Region also recorded 1,461 affected persons across 16 districts, while the Western North Region had 937 people affected across six districts, with no fatalities reported. The Western Region recorded about 2,000 affected persons across two districts. According to the Minister, One district in the Eastern Region was also affected, although there was no official record providing a specific figure for the number of people impacted there.

Despite the recovery and accounting for victims following the disaster, the whereabouts of the four-month-old baby remain unknown. The Minister did not disclose details about how the child went missing, where the baby was last seen or the latest developments in efforts to locate the infant. The continued disappearance leaves one family without answers nearly two months after the floods and underscores the enduring consequences of the disaster beyond the official death toll.

With 39 confirmed deaths and one person still missing, the June 29 floods remain one of the country’s significant recent flood disasters, affecting tens of thousands of people across multiple regions and districts. The government’s disclosure at the Accountability Series provides a clearer picture of the scale of the disaster while highlighting that, for the family of the missing infant, the crisis is not yet over.
