Gbande: Nobody Will Have Time Read NPP Petition
The National Democratic Congress has flatly dismissed the memorandum submitted by the New Patriotic Party after its “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration, with a senior party official declaring that government has no intention of engaging its contents.
Speaking on JoyFM’s Top Story on Thursday, 6th August, 2026, NDC Deputy General Secretary and Director of Operations Mustapha Gbande said the administration remains focused on governance and would not be diverted by what he termed a baseless protest document. He conceded that the march was conducted peacefully but argued that the petition lacked substance.
Mr Gbande was blunt in his assessment of the submission to the Presidency. “Let me assure him that petition they have submitted today, nobody is going to have time to read it because it doesn’t make sense, and nobody is going to waste time. We have a nation to build. We have a country to build,” he stated. He added that law enforcement actions would continue, stressing that accountability would apply across the political spectrum.
The NDC executive also criticized the timing of the demonstration, which fell on the first anniversary of the military helicopter crash that claimed eight state officials and personnel. He described the decision to protest on a day of national mourning as insensitive and accused the opposition of mobilizing citizens under misleading pretenses.
The NPP maintains that the demonstration was triggered by alleged politically motivated arrests and harsh bail conditions. Party leaders argue that the petition raises urgent constitutional concerns that demand executive attention. The rebuttal from the governing party, however, signals that the document is unlikely to receive formal consideration.
With both sides digging in, the episode underscores deepening friction over civic space, accountability, and political tolerance. The coming days are expected to test whether dialogue or further confrontation will define relations between government and opposition.
