Mahama Honors Mills, Vows Leadership With Integrity
President John Dramani Mahama returned to Asomdwee Park on the anniversary of Professor John Evans Atta Mills’ passing to commemorate a statesman he described as both mentor and friend, invoking a legacy of principled governance amid contemporary political turbulence.
Standing at the memorial site in Accra on the morning of the commemoration, Mr Mahama reflected on the enduring imprint of the late president. According to the Presidency, he observed that what endures is not the office once occupied, but the character that defined it.
He characterized Professor Mills as gentle, principled, and unwavering in conviction despite mounting public pressure. The President argued that such temperament remains instructive in an era marked by polarization and the velocity of political discourse.
Mr Mahama further articulated that Professor Mills demonstrated that civility and strength are not mutually exclusive. He stated that “Professor Mills taught us that kindness is not weakness, and that decency has no conflict with leadership. In a time when our politics can feel divided and impatient, his life is a quiet but powerful lesson.”
The tribute situates the late president within Ghana’s democratic consolidation. Professor Mills, who served as Head of State, was widely regarded for his academic rigor, restrained oratory, and commitment to constitutionalism. His tenure is often cited as a reference point for ethical stewardship in public office.
Concluding his remarks, President Mahama reaffirmed a personal commitment to emulate that example. He pledged to lead with integrity and to regard public service as a sacred trust, signaling an intention to anchor policy and conduct in the values associated with his predecessor.
