The world’s largest condom manufacturer, Karex, is set to raise prices by up to 30% or more due to the ongoing Iran war, which has disrupted the supply of crucial raw materials. According to #UTVGhana, the conflict has led to a surge in costs of synthetic rubber, nitrile, and other essential materials used in condom production.
Karex CEO Goh Miah Kiat stated that the situation is “very fragile” and the company has no choice but to pass on the increased costs to customers. The war has not only affected the supply chain but also led to a 30% increase in demand for condoms, as people prioritize family planning amid economic uncertainty.
The Malaysia-based company produces over 5 billion condoms annually, supplying major brands like Durex and Trojan, as well as public health systems like the UK’s NHS. With shipments to Europe and the US taking up to two months, Karex is struggling to meet the growing demand.
Goh emphasized that the need for condoms is even more pressing in times of economic instability, saying, “In bad times, the need to use condoms is even more because you’re uncertain with your future, whether you’d still have a job next year.” The company is working to boost output, but the situation remains challenging.
The impact of the Iran war is being felt across various industries, with rising freight costs and shipping delays exacerbating the shortage. As the global community grapples with the consequences, consumers may face higher prices for condoms and other essential products.
