Chief Imam’s Final Wish: Sign Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill Now

The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, has expressed a desire to see the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill signed into law before his passing, his spokesperson, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, has revealed. According to Sheikh Shaibu, the Chief Imam’s stance on the issue is “so strong against LGBT” and he wishes the President would expedite the process.

Sheikh Shaibu made the appeal while speaking on GTV’s Breakfast Show, emphasizing that the bill was a key campaign promise of the NDC during the 2024 elections and that public expectations remain high. He urged President John Dramani Mahama to remain firm and courageous in the face of external pressures, assuring him of support from the Muslim community.

The Anti-LGBTQ+ bill, formally titled the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ practices and promotion in Ghana. President Mahama has previously stated that he would sign the bill if passed by Parliament, but recently described LGBTQ+ issues as “highly emotive and sensitive” and not the most pressing challenge facing Ghana.

The bill has been a topic of national debate, with some arguing it is necessary to protect Ghanaian values and others seeing it as a violation of human rights. According to GhanaWeb, the bill was initially passed by Parliament in February 2024 but was not assented to by former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Sheikh Shaibu’s appeal adds to the growing pressure on President Mahama to take a decisive stance on the issue. The President has been urged to prioritize the bill, which is seen as a key test of his commitment to Ghanaian values.
