Ghana, Community of Democracies Pledge to Strengthen Ties

 

The Secretary General of the Community of Democracies, Dr. Mantas Adomėnas, has paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable James Gyakye Quayson, to discuss ways to deepen cooperation between Ghana and the Community of Democracies. The meeting highlighted the importance of democracy and governance in Africa and globally.

 

According to the Deputy Minister, democracy is facing challenges globally and within the sub-region, but Ghana has sustained its democratic credentials over the years. He emphasized the need to involve and empower the youth in governance and decision-making processes to ensure sustainability in Africa.

 

Dr. Adomėnas expressed concern about the growing backsliding of democratic principles worldwide and stressed the need to renew the democratic narrative to address emerging challenges such as disinformation and misinformation. He highlighted the importance of electoral integrity, inclusiveness, and adapting democratic governance to contemporary global realities.

 

The Secretary General also underscored the Community’s interest in deepening cooperation with Ghana, describing it as a beacon of democracy. The Deputy Minister assured Dr. Adomėnas of Ghana’s commitment to strengthening collaboration in promoting democratic governance.

 

The meeting concluded with assurances from both sides to strengthen collaboration in promoting democratic governance. The Community of Democracies was established about twenty-five years ago to promote and strengthen democratic governance.

 

The importance of women’s empowerment in strengthening democratic systems was also highlighted during the meeting.
