Amasaman China Mall Collapses: Ga West Assembly Orders Immediate Closure

The Ga West Municipal Assembly has shut down the Amasaman China Mall following a partial collapse of the building’s first floor on Sunday, December 28, 2025. The incident occurred around 6:00 pm, injuring two people who are currently receiving medical attention.

Preliminary investigations suggest excessive loading may have caused the collapse, compromising the structural integrity of the facility. A joint inspection team, including members of the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) and technical officers, assessed the situation and directed the mall’s closure.

The assembly has outlined conditions for reopening, including a comprehensive structural integrity assessment, correction of identified defects, and certification by relevant authorities. The public is advised to stay away from the mall until further notice.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Desmond Sowah Nai, stated that the decision was taken to protect lives and prevent further accidents, stressing that the Assembly would not compromise on issues of public safety. The injured persons are receiving medical attention.

The collapse has raised concerns about the enforcement of building regulations in rapidly developing urban areas. The Ga West Municipal Assembly has urged the public to cooperate and called on the management of the facility to fully cooperate with investigations and remedial works.

The incident serves as a reminder to developers to adhere strictly to building codes and prioritize public safety.
