The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria has admitted to clerical errors in the records of 15 out of 1,964 Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa, explaining that passport expiry dates were mistakenly recorded as dates of birth. The Commission said the mix-up occurred during data entry at the height of the emergency evacuation exercise.

According to the Commission, the error was identified during a routine reconciliation of the evacuation manifest with passport details. Officials explained that the columns for date of birth and expiry date were interchanged for 15 persons, leading to discrepancies that appeared as though minors or persons with invalid ages were listed on the evacuation roll.

In a statement issued in Pretoria, the High Commission insisted the errors do not affect the evacuees’ true identities or the reintegration and transportation allowances they received. It stressed that all 15 affected persons were duly verified with their Ghanaian passports and biometric details before boarding and on arrival in Accra.

The Commission noted that each of the 1,964 evacuees received the GH¢5,000 repatriation allowance and GH¢500 transportation support as announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It added that payment was based on physical presence and passport verification, not on the date-of-birth field alone, hence no one was denied or overpaid due to the clerical error.

The High Commission further assured the public that corrected records have been transmitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra and that internal controls have been tightened to prevent similar errors in future consular operations. It appealed to the public to disregard claims that the error indicates ghost names or misappropriation of evacuation funds.

The Ghanaian community in South Africa has commended the swift clarification, urging continued support for vulnerable nationals still in distress. Government says it remains on standby to evacuate more Ghanaians if needed.
