Freshers admitted to the University of Ghana will pay GHS 3,500 for traditional halls of residence following the completion of the university’s random bed allocation exercise, according to information circulating from UniversNews and confirmed by student sources.

The University of Ghana has adopted a transparent random bed allocation system to ensure fairness in assigning limited spaces in its five traditional halls – Legon, Akuafo, Commonwealth, Volta and Mensah Sarbah. Students were required to register via the official STS Portal at http://sts.ug.edu.gh to opt-in for the exercise, which was conducted openly and observed by stakeholders.

According to UG Academic Affairs directives, on-campus accommodation is not guaranteed with admission and students who do not secure beds must make alternative arrangements. The university has warned against payments to individuals or third parties, stating that buying and selling of beds is illegal and will attract sanctions.

The GHS 3,500 fee for traditional halls covers the 2025/2026 academic year and reflects recent adjustments due to rising costs of janitorial services, utilities and maintenance. University management explains the fee structure is officially approved and payable only through verified university channels such as Cal Bank, to avoid accommodation fraud.

Many freshers have expressed mixed reactions on social media, with some praising the transparent random allocation as fairer than the old first-come-first-served system, while others lament the high cost compared to previous years where traditional halls charged under GHS 1,000. Student leaders have urged freshers to verify fees on the official UG website and avoid perching, which remains prohibited.

As registration continues, the university says it will expand residential facilities including the Diamond Jubilee Hall built with IGF to ease pressure, but space remains limited in Accra due to high land costs.
