Former running mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Mathew Opoku-Prempeh, has stressed that Africa’s transformation depends on the continent’s ability to turn education into capability, energy into productivity, and good ideas into results that improve lives and endure beyond generations. He said resources and potential alone are not enough to drive sustainable development on the continent.

According to NAPO, Africa needs capable people, strong institutions and leadership that can translate ambition into sustainable development. “Our resources and potential alone are not enough; we need capable people, strong institutions and leadership that can translate ambition into sustainable development,” Dr. Opoku-Prempeh stated in a message reflecting on the continent’s future.

It was therefore a pleasure to share these perspectives with students and the university community at Coventry University during a public lecture on “Education, Energy and Sustainable Development: Preparing Future Leaders for Africa’s Transformation.” The lecture brought together academics, students and members of the diaspora to discuss practical pathways for Africa’s development.

The former Energy and Education Minister used the platform to highlight the critical linkage between education reform, reliable energy access and long-term sustainability. He noted that future leaders must be prepared to convert classroom knowledge into industrial capacity and turn energy resources into economic productivity that benefits ordinary Africans.

Dr. Opoku-Prempeh expressed hope that the conversation at Coventry University will encourage reflection on collective responsibility. “It is my hope that this conversation will encourage us all to reflect on the role we can play in building the Africa we want,” he added. His remarks have since generated discussion among youth groups and education stakeholders on social media.

Analysts say the message reinforces his long-held focus on technical education, STEM and energy sector reforms as pillars for industrialisation. As Ghana prepares for future leadership transitions, voices like NAPO’s continue to shape debate on how education and energy can be leveraged for sustainable growth.
