President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that the United States is seeking to renegotiate aspects of the rejected $109 million health compact, with some of the contentious clauses potentially set to be removed. The revelation was shared via EIB Network, GHOne TV and GHOne News alert.
According to President Mahama, the compact which was initially rejected by Ghana over concerns about certain conditions attached, is now back on the table for discussion. The US side is reportedly open to reviewing and potentially removing the clauses that sparked public concern and parliamentary opposition.
The $109 million health compact has been a subject of national debate, with critics arguing that some provisions undermined Ghana’s sovereignty and health policy direction. Government sources say the new negotiations will prioritize Ghana’s interests, ensuring that any agreement supports health sector strengthening without compromising national values.
President Mahama emphasized that Ghana remains committed to partnerships that improve healthcare delivery, but will not accept conditions that are inconsistent with the country’s laws and cultural values. Further engagements between the two countries are expected in the coming weeks, with details of revised clauses to be made public after consultations.
