Guelleh Secures Sixth Term as Djibouti’s President

Djibouti’s President Ismail Omar Guelleh has won a landslide victory in the country’s presidential election, securing his sixth consecutive term in office. According to official results, Guelleh garnered 97.8% of the vote, defeating his sole opponent Mohamed Farah Samatar, who secured just 2.2% of the vote.

The election, which was held on April 10, 2026, saw a voter turnout of 80.4%. Guelleh’s victory was widely expected, given his dominance in Djibouti’s politics since succeeding his uncle Hassan Gouled Aptidon in 1999. The president’s campaign posters blanketed the capital, and thousands attended his rallies, while Samatar struggled to gain recognition.

Guelleh’s re-election is seen as a guarantee of stability in the Horn of Africa region, but analysts point to future challenges stemming from the lack of a clear and widely accepted successor. The president’s health has also come under scrutiny, with some questioning his ability to continue leading the country.

According to #AFP, Guelleh told reporters, “By the grace of God, we have arrived here, and we hope that this will end in victory.” The president’s supporters argue that his leadership has brought economic growth and transformed Djibouti into a major hub for regional trade and military cooperation.

Djibouti’s strategic location at the Bab al-Mandeb strait, which connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, has made it an attractive location for international military bases, generating significant revenue for the country. However, human rights groups have accused the government of repressing dissent and restricting freedoms.
