Trump Removes Racist Video Depicting Obamas as Apes

US President Donald Trump has removed a video from his Truth Social account that depicted former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle as apes, following widespread condemnation from Republicans and Democrats alike. The video, which was posted late Thursday night, showed the Obamas with their faces superimposed onto the bodies of apes, set to the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” {{IE_0}}¹{{/IE_0}} {{IE_1}}²{{/IE_1}}.

According to CNN, the White House initially defended the post as an “internet meme”, but later claimed it was shared “erroneously” by a staffer. Trump himself denied responsibility, saying he only watched the beginning of the video and passed it on to a staffer.

The incident has sparked outrage, with Senator Tim Scott calling it “the most racist thing I’ve seen out of this White House”. Representative Mike Lawler urged Trump to apologize, saying the post was “incredibly offensive — whether intentional or a mistake”.

Trump has a history of sharing racist content on social media, and this latest incident has raised concerns about his fitness for office. The video’s removal has been seen as a response to pressure from Republicans, who are worried about the impact on their midterm election prospects.

The White House has changed its tone, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt saying the post was a mistake and would not be tolerated. The incident has sparked a heated debate about racism and accountability in US politics.
