Government Fuel Allowance U-Turn Sparks Outrage

A controversy has erupted over allegations that the government is still paying for fuel for officials, despite a directive cancelling such allowances. Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for the Bawumia Campaign Team, has accused the government of reneging on its promise to cut fuel allowances for government officials.

According to Aboagye, the government’s actions are a clear betrayal of its commitment to reduce public expenditure and prioritize national development. The cancellation of fuel allowances was announced in July 2025 as part of a broader effort to curb excessive government spending and redirect funds to essential sectors.

The directive, which was widely publicized, aimed to eliminate fuel allocations for political appointees, including ministers and senior government staff. However, Aboagye claims that the government is still footing the bill for fuel for officials, sparking outrage and accusations of hypocrisy.

The controversy comes against the backdrop of President John Dramani Mahama’s administration pushing for fiscal discipline and transparency in government spending. In July 2025, the government announced a series of cost-cutting measures, including the cancellation of satellite TV subscriptions and the reduction of ministerial appointments ¹ ² ³.

The government has yet to respond to the allegations, but the controversy is likely to fuel further debate on the need for accountability and transparency in public spending.
