Suspend diplomatic ties with S.A. – Kofi Bentil

Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil has urged the Government of Ghana to suspend diplomatic relations with South Africa, arguing that maintaining normal ties is unjustifiable while Ghanaian nationals continue to face violence amid recurring anti-immigrant protests.

Speaking on the issue, Mr. Bentil said Ghana must adopt a stronger diplomatic posture in response to the recent killing of a Ghanaian national and the persistent attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa.

He proposed that the Ghanaian government give South African authorities a three-month ultimatum to identify and arrest those responsible for the killing. According to him, failure to achieve that should result in the suspension of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Mr. Bentil maintained that it makes little sense for Ghana to continue normal diplomatic engagement with a country where its citizens are being targeted and killed. He further questioned the commitment of South African authorities to bringing the perpetrators to justice, insisting that Ghana must prioritize the safety and protection of its citizens abroad.

His remarks come as anti-immigrant demonstrations continue in parts of South Africa, with concerns growing over the safety of foreign nationals, including Ghanaians. The renewed protests have heightened fears within Ghanaian communities and prompted calls for stronger government intervention.

The comments have added to the growing national conversation on how Ghana should respond to repeated incidents of xenophobic violence in South Africa. Many observers believe the government must intensify diplomatic efforts to ensure justice for victims, hold perpetrators accountable, and secure greater protection for Ghanaians living and working in the country.
