Haruna Iddrisu Backs Prof. Naana Opoku-Agyemang for President
Ghana’s Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, has thrown his weight behind Vice President Prof. Naana Opoku-Agyemang, saying she’s more than capable of leading Ghana as president. He made this statement during a visit to the Ministry of Education, praising her leadership qualities, vision, and integrity ยน
Iddrisu believes Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s experience in academia, governance, and national service makes her a strong candidate for the top job. “She’s the Vice President of the Republic, and arguably, given her standing, she’s very capable of leading the country,” he said in an interview with Channel One TV .
The Minister also highlighted Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s calm yet firm leadership style, which has earned her respect across political divides and in civil society. He thinks she’s a unifying figure who can bring Ghanaians together.
Iddrisu’s endorsement comes as Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s popularity rises, with a Global InfoAnalytics survey in April 2025 ranking her first in voter preference with 26%. She’s seen as a frontrunner for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer contest.
With the 2028 general elections approaching, Iddrisu’s backing could give Prof. Opoku-Agyemang a boost. He pledged his “unwavering support” should she decide to run for president, saying it’s his “personal wish” that she becomes Ghana’s first female president.
