Government Stands Firm on Controversial Bill

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, has reiterated that the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill remains a national priority, despite intense debate and international pressure. The bill, which seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities and advocacy, has been a contentious issue in Ghana, with proponents arguing it protects traditional values and opponents claiming it infringes on human rights.

According to Sam Nartey George, the bill is still at the parliamentary stage and has not yet been presented to President John Mahama for assent. He expressed confidence that the President will sign the bill once it is passed by Parliament, citing President Mahama’s previous indication of support for the legislation.

The bill’s reintroduction has sparked renewed debate, with some arguing it is necessary to protect Ghanaian values, while others claim it will lead to increased stigma and violence against the LGBTQ+ community. Rev Lawrence Tetteh has urged politicians to avoid politicizing the issue, warning it could create division and harm relationships ¹ ².

Sam Nartey George has dismissed claims that he has changed his position on the bill, stating that his views on LGBTQ+ issues remain unchanged. He emphasized that the bill is not about politics, but about protecting Ghanaian family values.

The bill has been a subject of controversy, with some international organizations warning of economic repercussions if it is passed into law. Ghana’s previous abstention from a UN Human Rights Council vote on LGBTQ+ rights has also drawn criticism from some quarters.
